Sector Outlook: Positive
Sustains best-in-class performance; FCNR(B) inflows drive growth, NIM recovery expected from Q4FY27
Operational Metrics
- NII increased 17.7% YoY / 3.9% QoQ to Rs. 25,339 crores, while NIM moderated to 4.18% (-12bps YoY / -18bps QoQ). Management attributed margin pressure to a higher share of overseas branch assets and retail term deposits, alongside a decline in domestic margins excluding the tax refund benefit.
- Fee income grew 20.1% YoY / 7.0% QoQ to Rs. 7,795 crores, with retail, rural and business banking contributing approximately 75% of total fees. Non-interest income excluding treasury increased 12.5% YoY to Rs. 8,277 crores, supporting diversified income growth.
- PPOP increased 18.9% YoY / 0.9% QoQ to Rs. 20,575 crores, while operating expenses rose 8.5% YoY / 1.9% QoQ to Rs. 12,811 crores. Management indicated that the sequential increase in expenses largely reflected the cost of resources raised to fund FCNR(B)-linked lending, broadly offsetting the associated fee income benefit.
- PAT increased 20.1% YoY / 0.3% QoQ to Rs. 14,843 crores, supported by strong core operating performance and lower provisions. Provisions declined 6.9% YoY / 32.5% QoQ to Rs. 851 crores, while treasury income recorded a loss of Rs. 230 crores versus a gain of Rs. 220 crores a year ago. The bank continued to hold contingency provisions of Rs. 13,100 crores.
Asset Quality
- GNPA improved to 1.20% (-38bps YoY / -18bps QoQ), while NNPA declined to 0.30% (-9bps YoY / -5bps QoQ). Provision coverage was at 75%. Management expects normalized credit costs of around 50bps after adjusting for one-offs and seasonal provisions.
Balance Sheet Metrics
- Total advances grew 30.0% YoY / 12.3% QoQ to Rs. 18.32 lakh crores. Excluding FCNR(B)-linked lending, growth stood at 24.1% YoY / 7.3% QoQ, while domestic advances rose 22.8% YoY / 6.8% QoQ.
- Business banking and domestic corporate advances grew 33.8% YoY / 11.1% QoQ and 30.6% YoY / 10.4% QoQ, respectively. Retail and rural advances increased 14.8% YoY / 3.2% QoQ, supported by a recovery in home and personal loans. Corporate growth was driven by working capital demand and a shift towards domestic lending.
- Deposits grew 27.1% YoY / 11.8% QoQ to Rs. 20.50 lakh crores, including FCNR(B) inflows. Excluding these deposits, growth stood at 17.0% YoY / 3.1% QoQ. This reduced the CASA ratio to 35.8% (-505bps YoY/ -370bps QoQ).
Subsidiaries
- ICICI Life PAT grew 25.1% YoY, with H1FY27 VNB margin improving to 26.0% from 24.5%. ICICI Lombard PAT rose 15.4% YoY, although its combined ratio worsened to 107.0% from 105.1%. ICICI Prudential AMC PAT increased 6.1% YoY.
Valuation and Outlook
ICICI Bank delivered a strong operating performance in Q2FY27, with core operating profit growing 21.8% YoY and PAT increasing 20.1% YoY despite a treasury loss. Positive operating leverage, with core operating profit growth comfortably outpacing the increase in operating expenses, reinforces earnings resilience. Fee income also grew 20.1% YoY, supported by retail, rural and business banking, which contributed around 75% of total fees. More importantly, advances grew 24.1% YoY even after excluding FCNR(B)-linked lending, indicating strong underlying credit demand, while improving asset quality and normalized credit costs of around 50bps support earnings visibility. NIM compression remains the key near-term headwind, with management expecting a further decline in Q3FY27 before recovery from Q4FY27. The full-quarter impact of FCNR(B) deposits and seasonal agricultural lending mix is likely to outweigh the initial benefit of the October rate hike. However, the bank’s excess liquidity, which management expects to deploy over the next two quarters, should support credit growth as the FCNR(B) impact reverses. We view the temporary margin pressure as a trade-off for securing a large pool of fixed-rate funding to support franchise expansion, rather than a deterioration in the underlying business. The extent of the Q3 decline and the pace of recovery remain key monitorables. Beyond margins, the recovery in retail lending is encouraging, with retail and rural advances growing 14.8% YoY as mortgages and personal loans returned to mid-teen growth. Combined with demand-led corporate expansion and benign underlying credit costs, this supports the sustainability of the bank’s growth trajectory. The Rs. 13,100 crores contingency provision buffer provides an additional cushion against potential credit shocks, although agricultural portfolio remediation warrants monitoring. Overall, we remain constructive on ICICI Bank’s medium-term outlook, with earnings momentum dependent on the expected margin recovery, continued deployment of liquidity and sustained asset quality.
Key concall Highlights
- Jewel loan growth and agricultural remediation: Jewel loans grew 79.4% YoY but only 4.5% QoQ, as ICICI Bank temporarily moderated its lending activity while updating processes, distribution and risk controls to comply with revised RBI guidelines for loans against gold jewellery. This affected sequential growth, although management expects volumes to recover once the changes are completed. Separately, the bank is working on regulatory remediation of its agricultural loan portfolio, with an update expected over the next two quarters.
- Credit card strategy shifts towards customer primacy: Management is positioning credit cards as part of a broader customer relationship rather than a standalone product, with new variants targeted at specific customer segments. The portfolio declined 9.7% YoY / 0.2% QoQ, partly reflecting a base effect from last year’s September-end build-up.
- Subsidiary dividend income: Dividend income from subsidiaries declined to Rs. 463 crores from Rs. 810 crores a year ago, primarily because ICICI Prudential AMC shifted its dividend declaration frequency from quarterly to half-yearly.
