Leadership transition under Anup Bagchi; NIMs at cyclical bottom, retail and MSME growth gains momentum

Operational Metrics

  • NII increased 9.7% YoY / 3.2% QoQ to Rs. 34,620 crores, supported by healthy loan growth. NIM stood at 3.32% (-5bps YoY / +5bps QoQ), with management indicating that Q2FY27 marked the bottom of the margin cycle. The October rate hike is expected to support margins from Q3, although the full-quarter impact of FCNR(B) funding could partly offset the benefit.
  • Net revenue grew 5.6% YoY / 4.5% QoQ to Rs. 48,450 crores, supported by fee income growth of 9.6% YoY to Rs. 9,690 crores. Other income declined 3.6% YoY to Rs. 13,830 crores, as treasury trading gains fell 67.4% to Rs. 780 crores, partly offset by 18.3% growth in miscellaneous income to Rs. 1,810 crores.
  • Operating expenses increased 5.5% YoY / 4.3% QoQ to Rs. 18,970 crores, while the cost-to-income ratio remained stable at 39.1%. Management highlighted improving productivity, with service turnaround times declining 30% during the quarter, supported by tighter operating processes and technology investments.
  • PAT increased 4.7% YoY / 2.4% QoQ to Rs. 19,510 crores. Excluding treasury trading gains, underlying PAT grew approximately 12.6% YoY, indicating stronger core earnings growth. Provisions stood at Rs. 3,570 crores, with the credit cost ratio at 0.44%.

Asset Quality

  • GNPA improved to 1.11% (-13bps YoY / -6bps QoQ), while NNPA declined to 0.37% (-5bps YoY / -4bps QoQ). Credit costs stood at 0.44%, with provisions increasing 2.1% YoY / 16.8% QoQ to Rs. 3,574 crores. Capital adequacy stood at 18.87% (-109bps YoY / -70bps QoQ).

Balance Sheet Metrics

  • Gross advances grew 16.3% YoY / 0.8% QoQ to Rs. 32.20 lakh crores, while advances under management rose 15.3% YoY. Retail loans grew 11.7% YoY, supported by disbursements of Rs. 90,000 crores versus Rs. 76,000 crores in Q1FY27.
  • MSME and mid-market advances grew 23.5% YoY, while corporate and wholesale advances increased 16.4% YoY / 6.5% QoQ. Management highlighted Rs. 41,000 crores in ECLGS 5.0 disbursements as of August 2026.
  • Deposits grew 18.8% YoY / 2.7% QoQ to Rs. 33.27 lakh crores, including an approximately 4 percentage-point contribution from the special FCNR(B) window. Term deposits grew 22.8% YoY, outpacing CASA growth of 10.8%, with the CASA ratio at 31.6%. Retail CASA growth improved to 11.2% YoY from 9% a year ago.

Subsidiaries

  • HDB Financial Services PAT grew 34.2% YoY to Rs. 780 crores, HDFC Life rose 13.6% to Rs. 510 crores and HDFC Securities increased 26.1% to Rs. 270 crores. HDFC AMC PAT grew 4.2% YoY to Rs. 750 crores, while HDFC ERGO declined 11.1% YoY to Rs. 160 crores.

Valuation and Outlook

HDFC Bank’s Q2FY27 performance reinforces the improving fundamental outlook, with underlying PAT growth of approximately 12.6% YoY, excluding treasury trading gains, indicating healthy core earnings momentum. More importantly, management’s emphasis on retail and MSME lending provides clearer growth drivers for the coming quarters. Improving asset quality and contained credit costs of 0.44% further support the growth outlook. Management indicated that Q2FY27 markes the bottom of the NIM cycle. We expect margins to remain broadly stable in Q3FY27, as the initial benefit of the October rate hike is partly offset by the full-quarter impact of FCNR(B) funding. Thereafter, NIMs could improve as rate transmission benefits the bank’s largely floating-rate loan book (~70%), supported by a greater focus on retail and MSME lending, which could improve the loan mix and yields. Deposit mobilisation remains the key operational challenge. While deposits grew 18.8% YoY, term deposits expanded 22.8% against CASA growth of 10.8%, keeping the CASA ratio at 31.6%. Structural pressures on low-cost deposits continue to constrain funding-cost improvement. Incoming MD & CEO Anup Bagchi’s appointment is an important potential catalyst, with the opportunity to strengthen the deposit franchise, sharpen growth priorities and reinforce investor confidence through strategic clarity and execution. Despite the improving operating outlook, the company may take time to rerate. Management transition and corporate governance concerns could trigger institutional selling, as institutions tend to be particularly sensitive to uncertainty around leadership and governance. This may weigh on near-term stock performance even if earnings remain resilient. At approximately 1.8x P/B, HDFC Bank trades at a 30% discount to its closest peer, ICICI Bank, leaving scope for valuation convergence as execution improves and investor confidence strengthens. We remain constructive on the bank’s fundamentals, supported by emerging retail and MSME growth drivers, a potential NIM recovery and stable asset quality. However, the timing of a rerating will depend on earnings delivery, deposit-mix improvement and Bagchi’s ability to establish a credible strategic direction. The valuation remains attractive, although the discount may persist until these concerns ease.

Key concall Highlights

  • Productivity gains create operating leverage potential: Customer visits per resource per day increased approximately 50% QoQ, while product delivery turnaround times declined 10–15% and service turnaround times fell 30%. Management expects technology investments and tighter operating processes to improve throughput, with employees progressively redeployed towards customer-facing activities. Headcount is expected to remain broadly flat initially.
  • Liquidity and insurance regulations warrant attention: LCR stood at 113%, within management’s desired operating range of 110-120%, with a strategic response expected over the next few quarters. Separately, the draft insurance commission norms could materially affect insurance distribution economics in their current form. Industry submissions are due by end-November 2026, with the final impact dependent on the regulations and available mitigation measures.
  • Leadership transition enters the next phase: Incoming MD & CEO Anup Bagchi is expected to outline his priorities following discussions with regulators, customers, shareholders and other stakeholders. Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha has requested early retirement by December 2026, making the transition an important monitorable for strategic continuity and execution.
