Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd Result Update

Sector Outlook: Positive

India growth and accelerated synergies support margin expansion amid international headwinds

Torrent Pharmaceuticals reported 50.8% YoY/ 1.2% QoQ revenue growth to Rs. 4,979 crores in Q2FY27, driven primarily by the consolidation of JB Pharma, strong 20% growth in the base India business, and healthy performance in Brazil and the US.  Torrent’s base India business grew 20% YoY to Rs. 2,181 crore, outperforming IPM growth of 12%, while Curatio grew 34%, supported by new launches, advertising and field-force expansion. The semaglutide franchise achieved a 32% combined market share, with over 90% share in the generic oral segment.  Internationally, Brazil grew 20% in constant currency, driven by established brands and new launches, while the US grew 13% to US$44 million. Germany remained weak, declining 13% in constant currency due to lost tenders, supply disruptions and price reductions. EBITDA rose 53.8% YoY to Rs. 1,666 crore, supported by operating leverage, improved cost efficiencies, and faster-than-expected realisation of JB Pharma integration synergies, expanding the EBITDA margin by 66 bps to 33.5%.  However, PAT declined 9.6% YoY to Rs. 534 crore, mainly due to a sharp rise in finance costs and depreciation following the acquisition and consolidation of JB Pharma, along with higher R&D spend at 4.2% of revenue and an exceptional litigation settlement charge. The underlying JB business reported revenue of Rs. 1,086 crores, broadly flat YoY, with India-branded business growth of 7% and international business declining 7%, reflecting temporary disruptions associated with integration activities.

Valuation and Outlook

Torrent Pharmaceuticals delivered a strong operating performance in Q2FY27, supported by sustained domestic outperformance, strong growth in Brazil, and accelerating synergy realization from the JB Pharma integration. The base India business remains a key earnings driver, with 20% growth substantially ahead of the IPM, supported by chronic therapy execution, new product launches, field-force expansion and continued traction in Curatio. Management expects Indian pharma market growth to remain strong through FY27, with at least 10% growth considered sustainable into FY28. The semaglutide franchise is recovering after injectable supplies were restored in September, and management expects to regain a substantial portion of the lost market share over the coming months. The oral portfolio remains strong among generic players, supporting the long-term opportunity in the expanding GLP-1 market. Management expects EBITDA margins to improve gradually, with H2FY27 margins likely to exceed the Q2FY27 level of 33.5%. International performance remains mixed, with Brazil expected to sustain mid-teen growth, supported by new launches and a pipeline of 53 molecules under regulatory review. The US outlook remains constructive, backed by a stronger filing pipeline and new product launches, although incremental competition and pricing pressure remain key risks. Germany is likely to remain weak over the next few quarters, with management indicating that stabilization could take three to four quarters. Overall, Torrent’s long-term growth outlook remains supported by strong domestic execution, improving JB Pharma profitability, cross-selling opportunities and a healthy international launch pipeline, while near-term performance will depend on the normalization of JB business operations and a gradual recovery in Germany.

Key concall Highlights

Indian Business Outlook:

  • Torrent’s base India business reported 20% YoY revenue growth in Q2FY27, outperforming IPM growth of 12%. Performance was supported by new launches, field-force expansion and accelerating volume growth. Management expects the IPM to sustain growth of at least 10% in FY28, although the unusually strong growth witnessed in FY27 may moderate. During H2FY27, the company will focus on improving market share in targeted therapies, enhancing field-force productivity, and scaling up the Curatio portfolio.

JB Pharma Integration:

  • The merger, effective July 2026, has progressed broadly as planned, with the integration of India divisions and field forces largely implemented. Management expects JB India’s growth to recover gradually, with H2FY27 growth likely to exceed H1FY27. International recovery may take longer as delivery schedules normalize.

Cost Synergies:

  • Cost synergy realization is progressing ahead of the original timeline, driven primarily by India field-force and divisional consolidation, followed by procurement efficiencies. Management continues to maintain its cumulative Rs. 450 crore cost synergy target but expects most of the benefits to be realized within two years.

Field Force & Productivity:

  • The combined Torrent-JB India field force stood at approximately 9,100 medical representatives at the end of Q2FY27. Management expects the headcount to remain broadly stable through FY27, while potential expansion of around 500 representatives could take the combined strength to ~9,500-9,600 in FY28.

Brazil Business Outlook:

  • Brazil remained a key growth market, with constant-currency revenue of BRL236 million, up 21% YoY. IQVIA data indicated 26% growth for Torrent against market growth of 5.7%, supported by established brands, new launches and the generics division. Management expects 10-15% growth over the coming years, supported by a pipeline of 53 molecules awaiting ANVISA approval. However, lengthy approval timelines, intensifying price competition, and a strong domestic competitor remain key challenges. Torrent is optimistic about launching its semaglutide product in Brazil over the next six to nine months.

US Business Outlook:

  • The US business revenue grew 13% YoY in constant currency to US$44 million, driven by new launches and better-than-expected market-share gains. Torrent plans to file another 4-5 products by FY27, strengthening its pipeline. However, rising competition and price erosion in H2FY27 may weigh on growth, partly offset by launch-led volumes and cost optimization.

Germany Business Outlook:

  • Germany remained the weakest international market, with constant-currency revenue down 13% YoY due to lost high-value tenders, third-party supply disruptions, and mandated price reductions. Recovery remains uncertain, with potential stabilization over the next 3-4 quarters and a relatively mild near-term decline.
