Core Growth Resilient; FCNR(B) Deployment to Shape Margin Recovery
Operational Metrics
- Net Interest Income (NII) grew 16% YoY / 7% QoQ to Rs. 8,459 crores. NIM declined to 4.31% from 4.53% in Q1FY27, largely due to FCNR(B) mobilisation, which contributed 15 bps to the 22 bps QoQ decline. Underlying core margins remained broadly stable.
- PPOP increased 21% YoY / 4% QoQ to Rs. 6,382 crores, supported by 21% YoY growth in fee income to Rs. 2,926 crores. Non-interest income grew 23% YoY, driven by FX gains, debt syndication and higher disbursement fees.
- Operating expenses rose 14% YoY / 3% QoQ to Rs. 5,271 crores. Cost-to-income improved 160 bps YoY to 45.2%, while cost-to-assets declined to 2.40% from 2.66% in Q1FY27.
- Standalone PAT grew 29% YoY / 2% QoQ to Rs. 4,212 crores. Provisions declined 15% YoY to Rs. 803 crores, while credit costs moderated to 0.35% from 0.79% in Q2FY26.

- Unsecured retail credit costs improved to 35 bps from 46 bps in Q1FY27, alongside sequential portfolio growth of Rs. 1,730 crores. Management intends to pursue measured growth, primarily among existing customers, supported by improved underwriting and collections.
Balance Sheet Metrics
- Advances grew 25% YoY / 13% QoQ to Rs. 5,77,295 crores. Excluding FCNR(B)-linked loans and the KMIL portfolio, growth stood at 19% YoY / 8% QoQ. SME advances grew 27% YoY to approximately Rs. 1.4 lakh crores.
- Deposits increased 23% YoY / 14% QoQ to Rs. 6,51,491 crores, while growth excluding FCNR(B) stood at 13% YoY. Reported CASA declined to 38.2% from 42.3% a year ago due to FCNR(B) inflows; excluding these deposits, CASA improved to 41.8% from 40.3% sequentially.
- FCNR(B) mobilisation and KMIL transfer: The bank raised US$5.78 billion (Rs. 55,344 crores), helping fund the Rs. 9,600 crores KMIL portfolio acquisition, repay high-cost CDs and reduce IBPC borrowings by Rs. 9,800 crores.
Subsidiaries
- Consolidated PAT grew 26% YoY / 3% QoQ to Rs. 5,645 crores, with subsidiaries contributing Rs. 1,450 crores, up 18% YoY. Kotak Securities PAT remained broadly flat at Rs. 348 crores, while Kotak AMC PAT increased 11% YoY to Rs. 287 crores.

Valuation and Outlook
Kotak’s underlying advances grew 19% YoY, excluding FCNR(B)-linked loans and the KMIL portfolio transfer, driven by healthy traction across SME, corporate and retail banking. We expect this momentum to sustain, led by SME lending and a gradual recovery in unsecured retail, supported by improving credit costs and the bank’s calibrated approach to underwriting. Deployment of the remaining FCNR(B) funds into customer assets should provide an additional growth driver, although stronger domestic deposit mobilisation will be important to sustain expansion without increasing reliance on bulk funding. NIM declined 22 bps QoQ to 4.31%, with 15 bps of the contraction attributable to FCNR(B)-related funding and advances. While the bank plans to deploy the remaining liquidity into customer assets over the next few quarters, Q3FY27 will reflect the full-quarter funding cost before deployment benefits and repo-rate transmission contribute more meaningfully in Q4FY27. We expect NIMs to remain broadly stable, with scope for improvement from Q4FY27 as these effects begin to normalise. Meanwhile, fee income growth, particularly the 36% YoY increase in corporate fees, should provide some cushion against margin pressure through stronger transaction banking activity. Lower credit costs provide room for loan growth, although maintaining underwriting discipline will be critical as unsecured lending expands. RBI approval for Anup Kumar Saha’s appointment as MD & CEO from January 2027 also removes a key leadership uncertainty. Overall, We expect advances momentum to sustain, supported by SME lending and the gradual recovery in unsecured retail, while the pace of FCNR(B) deployment and domestic deposit mobilisation will be key determinants of margin recovery and returns.
Key concall Highlights
- NIM Deposit franchise strengthening: Excluding FCNR(B), the CASA ratio improved to 41.8% from 40.3% QoQ, supported by granular retail balances. Kotak 811 savings balances grew 34% YoY, providing an important avenue to strengthen the domestic deposit franchise.
- Unsecured lending strategy: Management reiterated that unsecured loans are not intended to be a customer-acquisition tool. The focus remains on existing deposit customers, leveraging the bank’s customer data to identify creditworthy borrowers while keeping acquisition costs and underwriting risks in check.
- Commercial vehicle and tractor portfolio: Delinquencies in commercial vehicles and construction equipment have declined over the past couple of quarters, supported by improved collection efficiency. Tractor loans have not yet shown a visible impact from the deficient monsoon, although management remains watchful of El Niño-related risks.
- Subsidiary performance and market-linked volatility: Subsidiaries contributed Rs. 1,450 crores, or 26% of consolidated PAT, with Kotak AMC PAT growing 11% YoY. However, market-linked mark-to-market losses on equity investments and movements in debt yields affected subsidiary earnings, highlighting their sensitivity to capital-market conditions.
- ECL transition: Management expects the one-time impact of transitioning to the expected credit loss framework to be below 2% of net worth. The potential recurring credit-cost impact of 12-15 bps remains subject to further clarification, making the transition an important watchpoint for future provisioning.
